| The best western RPG on the 'Engine (possibly the only Western RPG on the Engine!), Order of the Griffin is a Dungeon's and Dragon's license game which is split between classic 1st person view dungeons and villages, and top down view, turn-based battling on gridded battlefields. Its a little dated, but old school RPG fans should enjoy it. | |||||

| Essentially this is the PC Engine's response to the original NES Zelda, with a very similar theme and gameplay style. Happily the game retains all of the playability of its influence, whilst making some required improvements here and there, such as improved graphics and better overworld structuring (its set-out in a way which makes it harder to become lost). All in all anyone who's a fan of the original Legend of Zelda should check it out (though it is bettered by its later PC-Engine sequel). | |||||

| This is a cutesy horizontal shooter starring a baby dragon from Naxat Soft. The graphics here are nice, there's a lot of action going on onscreen, and it throws some of its own ideas in here and there, such as a points system focused on picking up as much fruit as possible. Being that the fruit is flying all over the place amongst the bullets and enemies it takes some real focus, and a good eye to play the game well. | |||||

| Here's an excellent, lessor known vertical shooter from Data East. The game is frenetic and exciting, with fast gameplay and a screen that's always packed with bullets and enemies (sometimes it even manages to approach the sort of mayhem you'd expect from the Saturn or PS1!). The power-ups here are impressive, and the boss battles well done, all in all its a very good example of the genre. | |||||

| This is an under-appreciated block-falling puzzle game where the aim is to fill each shape up with colour by merging two shapes of the same type. The combo's here are very intuitive, and easy to get a handle on, and as always the 2-player competitive mode its tons of fun, with each player dumping loads of garbage shapes on each other whilst desperately trying to stay afloat. | |||||

| This is a top-down perspective shooter where you play as a viking girl. The game doesn't look quite a polished as it could be, but the shooting action is pretty good, the above average focus on platforming elements makes it unique for its genre, and the levels even have multiple routes to keep you busy. | |||||

| This is a tough little vertical scroller from Irem that has that familiar shmup design of theirs made famous by titles like R-Type. Like many of their other games Image Fight can be brutal at times, but is intricately designed and very rewarding to fully master. The gameplay hook here is that your satellites fire in the opposite direction to where you're moving. The key to the game is learning how to aim them well, and using their multi-directional firing ability to its full capacity. | |||||

| Excellent 2-player horizontal shooter that has you flying over ravaged cities, piloting through zero-gravity space, and taking part in high speed chases through tunnels. Its yet another good shooter for the 'Engine, the power-ups work well, and the 2-player is fun. | |||||

| Here's a great platform game from Hudson which has you kicking and punching your way through the stages as Jackie Chan. Anyone familiar with the NES game will know what to expect, great pacing, versatile melee combat, and impressive boss fights abound. Happily, whilst superficially similar and sharing loads of gameplay elements the two versions aren't actually identical, as the layouts here deviate quite a bit sometimes and the whole game tends to have more focus on combat here than the NES game. All in all the two versions are different enough that its worth owning both versions. | |||||

| The third game in the Galaga series, Galaga 88' revamped and reworked the core gameplay in an attempt to make something that stood up to all its new fangled scrolling competition. The game adds in a whole load more variety in enemy behaviour, from aliens which dart around in different patterns, to those which inflate as they take damage, or split up into loads of mini versions of themselves, you can go up in difficulty levels (to places where there's more points) by collecting two pods which some enemies drop, and the game even throws in the odd scrolling level here and there for variation. Overall its an addictive blast that offers a change of pace from most of the other 'Engine shmups out there. | |||||
