Sunsoft's take on the Mega man series may not have been very original in the game play department, but with its darker and less cartoony atmosphere, and phenomenal music (some of the best on the system) it managed to etch itself into the NES community's conscience, and remains a very popular game even now.

Final Fantasy on NES

The first ever Final Fantasy game, the game which started it all, a classic in its day and a real milestone for JRPG's. Sadly as an experience Final Fantasy really hasn't aged that well, but its still more than worth checking out for its importance alone.

Chip N Dale on NES

An absolutely fantastic 2-player platform game from Capcom that would probably have entered much higher on this list if it wasn't so disappointingly short and easy, absolutely fantastic while it lasts though.

The sequel to Solomon's key isn't really that much like the original, but its still manages to be equally great. This time you have to work out the best way to put out the fires by pushing ice blocks onto them.

Startropics is another excellent adventure game made by Nintendo, many criticize it for being overly similar to The Legend of Zelda but this is a little unfair, sure it shares some game play elements but with its greater emphasis on switches, running narrative, new elements, and widely different atmosphere it manages to come across as a very different experience.

Vice: Project Doom

Vice Project Doom

A very high quality action game. Vice contains some very polished game play, loads of variation (some levels are side scrolling platform affairs whilst others are similar in style to Spy Hunter) and some great presentation with high quality, ultra cheesy cut scenes.

Super C on NES

Sure apart from the in-between levels (which are now in a top down shooter style) its very much like the first one, but it's from the Contra series, and like all Contra games it rocks, need i say more?

Tiny Toons on NES

Ok, so this game is pretty much Konami's clone of Super Mario Bros 3, but when the source material is unarguably one of the greatest platformers of all time is that really a bad thing? what Tiny Toons gives you is a chance to re-play a slightly different take on an amazing game (preferably after Mario 3's already been completed), and to be fair to it there are some cool new additions anyway (such as the choice of different characters when you start a stage)

Marble Madness

Marble Madness

Great, if not occasionally frustrating puzzle game where you have to guide a marble across the stage within a time limit, inspired later games like Super Monkey Ball.

All time LEGENDARY shooter which really pushed the genre forwards with its excellent power-up system. Pretty much awesome in all aspects and only beaten by it's own very high quality sequels.
