Rendering Ranger R2 |

Stand out versions - SNES |
|

Made by Manfred Trenz of the Turrican games fame, Rendering Ranger went for a more linear, action orientated stance as opposed to the exploratory nature of it's predesesors, this coupled with the pre-rendered DKC inspired graphics led to the game having a very different feel to the aforementioned series.. Unfortunately only ever released in Japan and in small numbers RR is now going for extortionate prices on Ebay. |

Stand out versions - Spectrum |

One of the most famous and successful Spectrum games ever made, Robocop managed to stay at the top of the UK software charts for well over a year, the game was very playable and had a lot of variation throughout. Those from the US may know this game from the Gameboy port, which was relatively accurate apart from the increase in difficulty. |

Stand out version - Mega Drive |

Robocop Vs Terminator was a welcome return to form for Robocop after some less than stellar games better left unmentioned, the gameplay is very solid and fun, theres some great weapons and bosses and the whole graphics style and bloodyness help to give it a bit of a unique edge. |

Stand Out Version - Mega Drive |

Rolling Thunder games are a bit under-appreciated really aren't they? I'm not sure why this is because the whole series of games are all pretty consistantly good and the 1st obviously had some level of influence on the industry, The only thing I can think of is that the main character always seems a bit faceless so maybe this is the reason why the games never managd to catch people's imaginations despite their greatness. |

Fun and full of variety with some great use of mode 7 effects the first Super NES Star Wars game was the closest the series ever came to having a vanilla run n' gun game, subsequent games seemed to veer more towards other genre's and somewhat diluted the shooting aspects. Great use of the Star Wars licence overall. |

Konami's wild west shooter made a nice change in theme from many of the other shooters out there, the level design is nice the presentation high with some great use of voice samples and generally the game is simply a lot of mindless action packed fun to play that's even better with a friend. |

Stand out versions - NES |

Great sequel that doesn't exactly do a hell of a lot new but manages to still be a great experience in it's own right with it's new levels and bosses, this one also decided on a more standard top down shooter style to it's secondary gameplay mode which turned out a more popular idea than the originals run-into-the-screen style and as such was adopted for subsequent releases. |

I've gone for the NES version here as though it's not as accurate to the arcade as some other versions I feel it's generally a lot more fun, and carries the run n' gun spirit of the feature better. The Mega Drive sequel/reimagining is also pretty good but falls more into the platformer category. |

Stand out versions - Mega Drive |

With very impressive graphics and atmosphere and a perfectly flowing gameplay experience Vectorman stands as one of the greatest Run N' Gun games of all time, not only does every level work well and have a feel of it's own but the level designers never stopped trying to intersperse new and unique ideas from start to finish. |
