Lemmings |
Lemmings is one of the all time puzzle game classics, pure and simple. The game has you using a variety of different commands on the accident-prone lemmings in order to get them to safety. it was ported to many different machines back in the day, but the 3DO version is a particularly good version, even including mouse support (which many console versions lacked) and some new CD music. |

FIFA International Soccer |

The best version of FIFA money could buy when originally released in 1994. It had smoother game play, much better graphics with multiple camera views, and some nice "famous moments in football" fmv's that really added to the overall presentation. The option for six player games was the icing on the cake and resulted in a lot of fun times for my friends and I back in the day. |

Wing Commander III |
After the original Wing Commander had been successfully remade and released on 3DO it was decided to bring the latest and most ambitious title in the PC series to date to the system, and they did a fantastic job of it. We have the same excellent mission-based spaceship shooting action of the original, but now the character interaction is done through FMV scenes and voice acting of actually quite a high calibre, with the cast being proper actors like Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, and John Rhys-Davies instead of the laughable actors starring in most interactive movies of the time. |

Road Rash |
Electronic Arts were really heavily backing the 3DO during most of it's lifetime, releasing not only most of their new games on it first but also making updates to many of their classic licenses as well, such as their frenzied Road Rash series of motorbike racers. The series absolutely shined on the more powerful hardware and had an extremely impressive soundtrack to boot, including official songs from Soundgarden and Therapy. |

Alone in the Dark |
This was a massively important release for the video game industry, pretty much creating the survival horror genre that would later be coined by games like Resident Evil. It was a tense, clever game that had a brilliant lovecraft-inspired story and an excellent 3DO CD soundtrack. Resident Evil owes a lot to this, playing and controlling in much the same way. Sadly, likely due to the fact that the only machines it appeared on were the PC and 3DO (as well as the age of the game resulting in a framerate that can be difficult to go back to), it rarely gets the attention it deserves. |

Space Hulk |
Space Hulk was one of the very first games where I experienced real tension. The monstrous genestealers here really seemed to act together as a pack and the brilliant quality sound very much added to the atmosphere, with it's eerie noises mixed in with your comrade's frantic shouts for aid. Its not an easy game by any means and you need to be at least slightly adept at strategy games as well as first person shooters to survive even the early levels, but the sheer level of quality to the game (a 3DO original I might add), means taking the time to master it is time well spent. |

Need for Speed |

I remember that this got a lot of big press when it came out and was billed as being the 3DO's killer app. Never before had there been a racing game that was so focused on realism like TNFS, it gave so many options (such as a time trial mode, numerous camera angles to choose from and an in depth replay function), was highly polished, and provided some truly impressive next gen graphics for the time. There's actually a surprising amount of content for a 1994 racing game too, with very long and varied courses in comparison to what the PS1 and Saturn would do in their first year. The game ended up getting ported to the other major consoles of the time but was changed a surprising amount, almost to the stage where the ports feel like different, more arcade focused games. |

Return Fire |
Return Fire is another classic 3DO original that along with The Need For Speed and Space Hulk ended up getting ported to the more popular machines of the time later on. The game is a spiritual sequel to the great Amiga game "Fire Power", the premise is simple, find your opponent's flag and take it back to your base using an assortment of different vehicles. This simple premise created an addictive multiplayer experience and an enduring classic. |

Super Street Fighter II Turbo |
When originally released this was the version of Street Fighter II to own, the graphics were beautiful and were well above what the contemporary 16-bit console versions had to offer, there was some phenomenal new CD music, and of course the usual great Street Fighter II gameplay was intact. This version included the four new characters introduced in the original "Super" version, as well as a new character "Akuma" who would appear and fight you during the final boss battle if you'd fulfilled the requirements. The stock 3DO pad was okay for the game but not the best, however, Capcom also released a dedicated pad for the 3DO, and Panasonic made an arcade stick too which both work much better. Not until the much later Saturn version arrived did anything come close. |

Star Control II |
This is actually not only my favourite 3DO game but one of my favourite video games on any format ever! The whole world of this RPG/Resource Management/arena shooter was just so perfectly realised that few RPG's come close to it. The plot of earth's struggle to free itself from slavery had too many twists and turns, funny moments and interesting characters to mention, and the level of freedom in the gameplay was never seen before, you could pretty much go anywhere in the entirety of space that you chose. Another thing that I feel important to mention is that the 3DO had many improvements made to it over the original PC version with improved sound and new voice overs and fmv sequences for all the major parts of the story. It was also the only console port the game ever received, surprising for a game that has so often (quite rightly I might add) appeared in lists of the greatest games ever made. |
