The 100 Best Saturn Games

Welcome to our Top 100 Best Saturn games. Now, for anyone new to the site we follow a set of guidelines for all our lists. We aim to represent the best of all genre's, we try to limit the number of sequels included to allow more underrated games to shine, and also tend to avoid games that have been ported from earlier systems that don't use the hardware to its full potential. The best Import games are allowed, but only when they're import friendly and don't require an FAQ to play.

Thanks and enjoy the list!

Bug

Bug on Saturn

Whilst many consider Mario 64 to be the first proper foray into 3D platforming, games like Jumping Flash on the PS1, and this game, Bug, represent the real early attempts at putting platformer's into 3D. Bug has you walking around the 3D world in a hop and bop style manner (jump on the enemies to defeat them). It was very impressive at the time, even being considered by some reviewers as a landmark release, but unfortunately its not dated that well, these days the gameplay is a little bit on the rigid side in comparison to what you'd expect, and it can be quite unforgiving at times. Definitely worth trying if you run into it cheap though.

NBA Action

99
NBA Action on Saturn

A good basketball game which gives you a nice amount of different moves that can be strung together fairly smoothly, and has some impressive (for the time) graphics.

Street Racer

98
Street Racer on Saturn

Whilst its no Mario Kart, Street Racer is a fun, colourful, and playable kart racer, there's lots of courses, and well designed characters, not to mention a manic, and very fun 8-player split screen mode!

Gex

97
Gex on Saturn

This 1st game in the Gex series was a very solid 2D platformer. The game is a good length, includes a lot of variation, some nice graphics with loads of different, and interesting environments, and a few of its own unique ideas (apart from the usual hop and bop gameplay Gex can stick to walls and the ceiling). The repeating voice overs get to be a bit much after a while but all in all this is a very playable game.

Hexen

96
Hexen on Saturn

One of the earliest of the Doom clones to arrive on PC and it was very well ported to Saturn (unlike Doom itself which was crap). effectively this is Doom style corridor shooting set it medieval times, but there's also a few RPG elements thrown in for good measure to keep it unique.

The Horde

95
The Horde on Saturn

The Horde is a strategy game where you harvest crops, invest in new weapons and build defences to help you protect your village and fight off "the horde", a bunch of monsters who like to smash building down and eat farmers. The game is a mixture of timer based sections where you build traps and harvest crops etc, and real time action sections where you actually run around yourself killing the Horde monsters.

High Velocity

94
High Velocity on Saturn

This is a good racing games with some nice colourful graphics, and gameplay, it doesn't really shine that much (only three tracks and one opponent) but doesn't do anything particularly wrong either, worth checking out for fans of the genre.

Pandemonium

93
Pandemonium on Saturn

Here we have a pretty good platform game that uses an impressive looking combination of 2D gameplay running with 3D background designs. Pandemonium is challenging, has a good length, and nice music, its from the same people as Gex.

Madden 98'

92
Madden on Saturn

Basically, its the usual great Madden gameplay, but with improved options and new features over the previous releases.

Blazing Heroes/Mystaria

91
Blazing Heroes

One of the earlier Strategy RPG to make it to the Saturn, but still a very worthwhile one, with interesting characters, well judged strategy balancing, and a good plot. Its certainly not Shining Force III, but being that its one of the cheapest RPGs on Saturn, whilst also one of the better ones its most assuredly worth picking up.
